Abstract

The invention comprises 9a -hydroxy-4-pregnenes of the general formula <FORM:0835515/IV (b)/1> wherein R and R1 are both hydrogen or are both alkanoyl radicals containing up to 6 carbon atoms, and X is the divalent radical >CHOH or >CO, and the preparation thereof by reacting a 9b ,11b -epoxide of the general formula <FORM:0835515/IV (b)/2> wherein R and R1 are both alkanoyl radicals containing up to 6 carbon atoms, with perchloric acid in a mixture of water and a water miscible to form a desired compound in which X is >CHOH, and if desired, oxidizing, e.g. with chromic anhydride in pyridine, the compound thus produced to form a compound in which X is >CO, and at any time replacing R and R1 by hydrogen. In the examples 16a , 21 - diacetoxy - 9a ,11b , 17a - trihydroxy - 4 - pregenene - 3,20 - dione, 16a , 21 - diacetoxy9a 17a - dihydroxy - 4 - pregnene - 3,11,20 - trione and 9a ,11b ,16a ,17a ,21 - pentahydroxy-4 - pregnene - 3,20 - dione are prepared.ALSO:A therapautic composition suitable for injection, internal use, or topical application contains as the active ingredient a 9a -hydroxy-4-pregnene of the general formula <FORM:0835515/VI/1> wherein R and R1 are both hydrogen or both alkanoyl radicals containing up to 6 carbon atoms. Thus the composition may be in the form of a capsule, pill, tablet, a solution for injection, ointment or salve.
