Abstract
Kanamycin salts, which give prolonged therapeutically useful blood levels and/or urine levels of the antibiotic, are obtained by reacting kanamycin base or a salt thereof with riboflavin-51-phosphoric acid or one or more bile acids. The kanamycin may be kanamycin A or B or a mixture thereof. The bile acids may be a single bile acid, e.g. glycocholic acid, taurocholic acid, cholic acid, dehydrocholic acid, desoxycholic acid, cholanic acid, dehydrodesoxycholic acid, lithocholic acid, chenodesoxycholic acid and dehydrodesoxycholic acid, or a mixture thereof, particularly the mixture present in ox bile extract. Certain salts are put up in therapeutic compositions (see Group VI).ALSO:An aqueous injectable therapeutic composition comprises 50 to 300 mgm. karamycin riboflavin-51-phosphate (see Group IV (b)) per ml. of injection and at least one pharmaceutically-acceptable suspending agent, e.g. a mixture of sorbitan monopalmitate and a polyoxyalkylene derivative thereof. A similar karamycin composition giving prolonged blood levels and/or urine levels of karamycin is obtained by mixing karamycin desoxycholate (see Group IV (b)) with a diluent for oral use.
