Abstract

The invention comprises steroids of the general formula: <FORM:0963408/C1/1> wherein R1 represents hydrogen or an acyl or glycoside radical, R2 represents a H, b H or b OH, R3 to R6 represent hydrogen or a hydroxy radical, R7 represents a radical of the formula: <FORM:0963408/C1/2> and R8 represents an optionally substituted alkyl, cyclohexyl, aryl, aralkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical, and wherein the dotted line between the 4- and 5-positions denotes the optional presence of a double bond, and a process for the preparation of steroidal Schiff's bases derived from steroids of the 19-oxo-cardenolide and 19-oxo bufadienolide series as well as their 3-glycosides and esters by reacting steroids of the said series containing an aldehyde group at C10 with a nitrogen containing compound of the formula R-N=X wherein X represents H, H or a lower alkylidene radical and R has the same significance as R8 above, and isolating the derived reaction product from the reaction mixture under approximately neutral conditions. The preferred reactants for the above process have the general formula: <FORM:0963408/C1/3> wherein the dotted line and R1 to R7 have the above significance. Therapeutic compositions useful as cardioactive pharmaceutical agents contain steroids of the first general formula above. The compositions may be administered orally and may be in the form of tablets, pills, dragees and suppositories.
