Abstract

The invention comprises 1a ,2a -methylene-5a -androstane derivatives of the formula <FORM:1029749/C2/1> in which R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an acyl radical and R2 represents a saturated or unsaturated low alkyl radical containing 1-4 carbon atoms, and a process for the preparation thereof wherein a saturated or unsaturated alkyl group is introduced into 1,2a -methylene-5a - androstan - 17 - one by subjecting the 17-keto group to the Grignard reaction, or an alkynyl group is introduced in an analogous manner, and may, if desired, be reduced to the corresponding vinyl or saturated alkyl group, and depending on what group R1 is to represent, the primary steroid alcohol formed may be esterified with the desired acid or with a reactive acid derivative of said acid. Pharmaceutical compositions having anabolic and anti-fertility activity and containing the above compounds are administered orally in tablets, dragees, capsules, pills, suspensions or solutions.
