Abstract

The invention comprises 2a -alkyl-9a , 10a -epoxy-estr -4- en -3- one derivatives having the general formula: <FORM:0974525/C1/1> where R represents a lower alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms and 2 represents a hydrogen atom, an acyl group derived from an organic carboxylic acid having from 2-18 carbon atoms or a lower alkyl radical having from 1-6 carbon atoms, pharmaceutical compositions thereof, and processes for the preparation thereof, in which a 2-alkyl-4, 5-seco-estr -9- en -3, 5-dione derivative of the general formula: <FORM:0974525/C1/2> wherein R and Z are as defined above, is reacted with an alkaline cyclization agent forming the corresponding 2a -alkyl and 2b -alkyl epimers of 2-alkyl-estra-4, 9-dien -3- one, these epimers are separated and the 2a -epimer is then reacted with an epoxidising agent to yield the corresponding 2a -alkyl-9a , 10a -epoxy-estr -4- en -3- one. As cyclization agent, there may be used sodium tamylate and as epoxidising agent perphthalic acid may be employed. The products thus obtained may be further converted by saponification and/or acylation, or etherification as appropriate. The pharmaceutical compositions, having pituitary inhibiting, estrogenic, androgenic, myotrophic or antilipaemic activity, are administered orally, perlingually, transcutaneously or rectally in the forms of tablets, pills, sterile injectable liquid media, and suppositories.
