Abstract

The invention comprises a compound of the formula <FORM:1023719/C2/1> wherein R and R1 are hydrogen or alkanoyl containing 1-6 carbon atoms and R2 is hydrogen, methyl, ethynyl or chlorethynyl and when R2 is hydrogen then R1 is alkanoyl containing 1-6 carbon atoms and the preparation thereof by reduction of the corresponding 3-keto steroid with a metal borohydride. The 3-esters of the diols are obtained by the usual esterification techniques. The 3-keto-5(10),9(11)-androstadienes employed as starting compounds are obtained by reacting the corresponding 4,9(10) compounds with an orthoformate ester. Pharmaceutical compositions having hypocholesteremic activity and containing the above compounds are administered in tablets, capsules, and pills.
