Abstract

The invention comprises a compound having the formula: <FORM:0872032/IV (b)/1> wherein X is the carbonyl radical or the b -hydroxymethylene radical, R and R1 are hydrogen or the acyl radical of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid containing from 1-12 carbon atoms, inclusive, and wherein, when R is acyl, R1 is acyl and a process for the preparation thereof which comprises reacting an 11-oxygenated 21-acyloxy-4,17(20)-pregnadiene-3-one having the formula: <FORM:0872032/IV (b)/2> with selenium dioxide to produce the corresponding 16-hydroxy compound. Subsequent esterification gives the corresponding 16,21-diacyloxy - 4,17(20) - pregnadiene - 3,11 - dione. Illustrative products are 11b ,16,21-trihydroxy-4,17(20)-pregnadien-3-one, 11b ,16-dihydroxy-21 - acetoxy - 4,17(20) - pregnadien - 3 - one, 11b - hydroxy - 16,21 - diacetoxy - 4,17(20) - pregnadien-3-one, 16,21-dihydroxy-4,17(20)-pregnadien-3,11-dione, 16-hydroxy-21-acetoxy-4,17(20)-pregnadiene-3,11-dione and 16,21-diacetoxy-4,17(20)-pregnadien-3,11-dione. Specification 749,199 is referred to.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprising a compound of the formula <FORM:0872032/VI/1> wherein X is the carbonyl radical or the b -hydroxymethylene radical, R and R1 are hydrogen or the acyl radical of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid containing from 1-12 carbon atoms, inclusive, and wherein, when R is acyl, R1 is acyl, and a pharmaceutical diluent are administered orally as tablets, powders, pills, capsules, solutions, emulsions, suspensions, syrups, or elixirs.
