Abstract

The invention comprises 2a -methyl-9a -fluoro-11b , 17a - dihydroxy - 4 - pregnene - 3, 20 - dione 17 - acylate, wherein the acyl radical is that of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid containing 1-12 carbon atoms inclusive, and a process for the preparation thereof by reacting 2a -methyl-9a -bromo - 11b , 17a - dihydroxy - 4 - pregnene - 3,20-dione 17-acylate with a mild base to obtain the corresponding 2a -methyl-9b ,11b -epoxy-17a -hydroxy-4-pregnene-3,20-dione 17 - acylate and reacting the 9,11-epoxy-compound thus obtained with hydrogen fluoride to obtain the corresponding 2a - methyl - 9a - fluoro - 11b , 17a - di - hydroxy - 4 - pregnene - 3, 20 - dione 17 - acylate. Specification 810,859 is referred to.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions having progestational and anti-inflammatory activity comprise 2a - methyl - 9a - fluoro - 11b ,17a - didroxy - 4 - pregnene - 3,20 - dione 17 - acylates, and a pharmaceutical carrier with or without coacting antibiotics and germicides. They are administered orally, parenterally or topically as tablets, powders, capsules, pills, solutions, emulsions, suspensions, syrups, elixirs, ointments, creams, and lotions.
