Abstract

The invention comprises compounds havingthe formulae: <FORM:0869799/IV (b)/1> <FORM:0869799/IV (b)/2> <FORM:0869799/IV (b)/3> and a process for the preparation thereofwhich comprises treating a compound of the formula: <FORM:0869799/IV (b)/4> with an epoxidising agent to form the corresponding 5,6-oxido compound, alkylating this compound to produce a 5a ,11-dihydroxy-6,11-dialkylallopregnane-3,20-dione-3,20-bis (lower alkylene) ketal, hydrolysing this compound to obtain a 5a ,11-dihydroxy-6,11-dialkylallopregnane-3,20-dione, which may be dehydrated to obtain a 6,11-dialkyl-11-hydroxyprogesterone. Illustrative products of the invention are a 5a , 11b - dihydroxy-6b ,11a - dimethyl-allopregnane-3,20-dione 3,20-bis (lower alkylene) ketal, 5a , 11b - dihydroxy-6b ,11a - dimethyl-allopregnane-3,20-dione, and 6a ,11a -dimethyl-11b -hydroxy-progesterone. Specification 734,805 is referred to.ALSO:A pharmaceutical composition comprises a 6,11 - dialkyl - 11 - hydroxy - progesterone and a pharmaceutical diluent.
