Abstract

The invention comprises 6-chloro-17a -hydroxy-4-pregnene-3,20-dione 17-acetate, the corresponding D 4,6, D 1,4, or D 1,4,6 compounds and a process for the preparation thereof by dehydrating 6b - chloro - 5a , 17a - dihydroxypregnane - 3, 20 - dione 17-acetate and, if desired, subjecting the 6a - chloro - 17a - hydroxy - 4 - pregnene - 3, 20 - dione 17-acetate thus produced to treatment with chloranil and/or 1-dehydrogenation using selenium dioxide. The 6b - chloro - 5a , 17a - dihydroxypregnane-3,20-dione 17-acetate is obtained by treating 5a ,6a -oxido-3b ,17a -dihydroxypregnan-20-one 17-acetate with HCl to obtain the 6b -chloro-5a -hydroxy compound and oxidising this to produce 6b -fluoro-5a ,17a -dihydroxypregnane-3,20-dione. Depending on the acid dehydration agent the 6a - or 6b -isomers are produced. Specification 886,963 is referred to.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise 6a -or 6b - chloro - 17a - hydroxy - 4 - pregnene3,20 - dione - 17 - acetate, 6a - chloro - 17a - hydroxy - 1,4 - pregnadiene - 3,20 - dione 17-acetate, 6 - chloro - 17a - hydroxy - 4,6-pregnadiene - 3,20 - dione 17 - acetate or 6-chloro - 17a - hydroxy - 1,4,6 - pregnatriene-3,20 - dione 17 - acetate and a pharmaceutical diluent. They are employed orally as pills, tablets, capsules, solutions, syrups or elixirs, or in liquid forms for injection. Specification 886,963 is referred to.
