Abstract

883,586. Propellant charges. AEROJETGENERAL CORPORATION. July 24, 1951, No. 17566/51. Class 9(2). A solid propellant charge is made by mixing an inorganic oxidising agent with an unsaturated alkyd resin and an allyl or vinyl or other unsaturated polymerizable compound and then heating the mixture, preferably with an organic peroxide or hydroperoxide. Oxidising agents specified are the chromates, dichromates, permanganates, nitrates, chlorates and perchlorates of sodium, potassium, lithium. rubidium, caesium, ammonia or hydrazine. Carbon may be added before copolymerizing. For the preparation of the alkyd resin many polyhydric alcohols and polybasic acids are specified. Styrene, vinyl acetate, esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, butadiene, acetylene, and allyl compounds are amongst the specified unsaturated polymerizable compounds. A fish or vegetable oil may be added to the charge as a blending agent.
