Abstract

A thermoplastic binding agent which becomes fluent between 90 DEG and 125 DEG C. and is devoid of organic nitrates, for example cellulose acetate and water-insoluble resinous polymerized unsaturated compounds, such as a polymerized ester or nitrile of acrylic or methacrylic acid, a polymerized vinyl ester of an organic or inorganic acid, a polyvinyl acetal, or a polymerized unsaturated hydrocarbon such as polystyrene or polymerized ethylene is used in the self-combustible core composition of a water-proof non-detonating fuze for blasting and like purposes, together with a pulverulent mixture of barium peroxide and a reducing agent such as sulphur, silicon, magnesium, calcium silicide, or ferrosilicon. A plasticiser such as phthalic and phosphoric esters may be included for the binding agent, and in order to obtain fuzes of different burning speeds other ingredients may be added in varying proportions, for example iron and potassium nitrate; aluminium and potassium nitrate, calcium oxalate, potassium bichromate, calcium silicide and potassium nitrate. The pulverulent mixture of barium peroxide and a reducing agent, with or without other ingredients is worked with the binding agent at about 125 DEG C. and extruded at a temperature not exceeding 125 DEG C.; the extrusion temperature is preferably higher than that of working.
