Abstract
The self-combustible material of the core of a waterproof non-detonating fuze for blasting and like purposes in the form of a coherent rod of imporous composition comprises a bituminous binding agent having a softening point between 60 DEG and 200 DEG C., but preferably between 80 DEG and 120 DEG C. and pulverulent oxidizing and pulverulent reducing agents. Suitable combinations of pulverulent oxidizing and reducing agents are, for example: a lead compound with silicon, and barium peroxide with a reducing agent, such as sulphur, silicon, magnesium, calcium silicide, and ferrosilicon, but potassium nitrate may be used in partial replacement of the lead compound or barium peroxide. Examples of bituminous materials are Trinidad bitumen, blown asphalts, residual asphalts, and pitches. The pulverulent mixture of oxidizing and reducing agents may be worked with the bituminous binder at a temperature between 60 DEG and 200 DEG C. sufficient to give the necessary fluency, or desirably the oxidising and reducing agents may be worked in separately and the resulting composition is extruded at a temperature not higher than 150 DEG C.
