631,143. Fuzes for blasting ; fuze compositions. ZENFTMAN, H., OWENS, R. D. J., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 15, 1947, No. 22707. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] Relates to waterproof non-detonating fuzes, in particular safety fuzes, for blasting and like operations which comprise an extruded core in a protective covering. According to the invention, the core is of a homogeneous thermoplastic composition comprising nitropolystyrene with a nitrogen content between 9.4 and 14.4 per cent and a softening point between 60‹ and 200‹ C., pulverulent oxidising and reducing agents being uniformly distributed throughout. The proportion of nitro-polystyrene is such that the composition is extrudable between 60‹ and 200‹ C. and yet allows continuous propagation of combustion through the core. The preferred nitrogen content of the nitropolystyrene is between 11.0 and 14.4 per cent. A mixture of oxidising and reducing agents is worked with the plasticised nitropolystyrene in a Werner Pfleiderer machine to form the core composition, at a temperature between 60‹ and 150‹ C. and extruded through a cylindrical die, preferably at temperatures between 80‹ and 120‹ C. The core may be extruded to enclose an axial metal wire or textile thread. The oxidising and reducing agents may be a lead compound and silicon or barium peroxide and a reducing agent such as sulphur, silicon, magnesium, calcium silicide or ferro-silicon. Examples are given of fuzes made according to the invention having burning speeds between 96 secs. per yard and 408 secs. per yard. In these examples the nitropolystryene has a molecular weight of about 100,000 and a nitrogen content of 13.96 per cent and is plasticised with di-nitrotoluene oil in the ratio of 40 : 60.
