Abstract

652,542. Blasting and like fuzes. JONES, E., FORLIN, J., E., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 18, 1948, No. 21791. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] A cord-like ignition device is formed by working a mixture of pulverulent oxidizing and reducing agents with a plasticised non-detonating thermoplastic medium to form a thermoplastic composition 2 at a temperature preferably between 60‹ and 150‹ C. and extruding the composition around a pliable metal wire 1, preferably at a temperature between 80‹ and 120‹ C. After the composition has solidified, bare pliable metal wire 3 is spun or braided round the core, the wire being spaced to expose areas along the cord uncovered by the metal. A layer 4 of varnish is then applied to the cord. In example 1. the composition consists of 47 per cent red lead, 12 per cent potassium perchlorate, 23 per cent silicon mixed in 9 per cent nitrocellulose, 8 per cent dibutyl phthalate, 0.5 per cent diphenylamine, and 0.5 per cent citric acid, all percentages being by weight. This composition is extruded around a copper wire 28 s.w.g. and is surrounded by four spun and four countered strands of copper wire 36 s.w.g., the resultant fuze being varnished with a nitrocellulose dope. Several examples are given of alternative compositions. By varying the gauge of the central core wire and the number of the covering wires, the rate of burning can be altered. The core wire may be replaced by a cotton yam. Specifications 541,202, 579,388, 580,409 and 631,143 are referred to.
