Classes 9(1) and 9(2) A cord - like ignition device comprises a flexible incend i a r y waterproof envelope 4 confining a gas - permeable wick structure, the envelope being formed of a non - detonating deflagrating composition comprising a mixture of oxidizing and reducing agents bonded by a non - detonating combustible substance and having a high heatemissivity with low-gas evolution characteristies. The wick structure has at least one element comprising one or more filamentary portions. In the Figure the wick elements 1 consist of three cottons 2 spun together and impregnated with a black - powder nitrocellulose composition. The wick structure is spun and countered with two flat cottons 3 each consisting of six cottons of No. 30 count. The envelope 4 consists of a mixture of red lead, silicon and potassium chlorate bonded with a balata-rubber mixture. A paper yarn may be used for the wick structure and metal or textile filaments may be spun and countered around the outer surface of the device. In the given examples, the wick structure is impregnated with a composition comprising 30 parts nitro - cellulose solution and 20 parts sulphurless meal black powder. The envelope may consist of 26.2 parts plasticized nitrocellulose, 0.5 parts diethyl diphenyl urea, 23.0 parts red lead, 10.5 parts potassium nitrate, 22.2 parts potassium perchlbrate, 4.4 parts silicon, 8.3 parts calcium silicide and 4.9 parts flake charcoal. An alternative composition given is 10 parts rubber-balata composition, 47.0 parts red lead, 31.2 parts potassium perchlorate and 11.8 parts silicon, the rubber-balata composition being 25 parts mixed balatas and 7 parts rubber. All parts in the compositions are by weight. Specifications 652,542, and 728.240 are referred to.
