Abstract

A fuze composition comprising (a) a mixture of pulverulent oxidizing and reducing agents, and (b) a plastic binding agent comprising a water-insoluble resinous polymerized unsaturated compound which becomes fluent between 90 DEG and 125 DEG C. is extruded to form a coherent non-porous rod, and the rod is enclosed within a waterproof envelope. The resinous compound may be a polymerized ester or nitrile of acrylic or methacrylic acid, a polymerized vinyl ester of an organic or inorganic acid, a polyvinyl acetal, polystyrene or polymerized ethylene, and may be plasticised with normal phthalic esters or phosphoric esters. The mixture may comprise silicon and a lead compound thermally decomposable to yield products including lead monoxide and free oxygen, e.g. red lead, lead peroxide or lead nitrate; substantially gasless mixtures can be obtained from red lead and an excess of silicon; either potassium nitrate or barium nitrate may be substituted for a portion of the lead compound. In mixing (a) and (b), the procedure may consist in first incorporating either the oxidizer or the reducer with the binder and then working in the reducer or the oxidizer. The mixing is effected at 90-125 DEG C., and the temperature of extrusion may be higher than the temperature of mixing.
