Abstract

A plastic explosive composition is prepared by impregnating a mixture of a high explosive and nitrocellulose with a liquid containing a nitrate ester. The impregnation may be carried out in situ in a mould, shell, or bomb case. The intermediate mixture is obtained by mixing nitrocellulose and the high explosive, with the optional addition of a small amount of nitroglycerine, a plasticizer, stabilizer, and a solvent for the nitrocellulose, e.g. acetone; the mixture may be drawn, cut, and dried, or granulated by stirring in the presence of an osmotic agent, sticking inhibitor, or surface-active agent. In examples, the high explosives are hexogen, PETN, or a mixture thereof, the nitrate ester is nitroglycerine, the plasticizer is ethyl phthalate or diethyl phthalate, and the stabilizer is centralite; adipic dinitrile is also added as an accelerator. The final composition is gelled at 50 DEG C.
