Abstract

Smokeless nitrocellulose powders are made in the form of globules by dissolving the powder in a solvent before or after its addition to a "vehicle" such as water with which the solvent is immiscible, agitating the vehicle with the dissolved powder so that globules of the dissolved powder are formed in the vehicle, and then heating the mass to evaporate the solvent. The globules may be slightly porous and their surface may be treated with a deterrent such as dinitrotoluene, or an accelerator such as nitroglycerine, or with both deterrents and accelerators.
