Graphite articles with an internal cavity of pre-determined form are made directly by the compression, by non-explosive means, of a powder of the raw material about a core composed of a solid material which can be easily eliminated. The core material may be fusible, for example an alloy of low melting point, in which case it can be eliminated by making an orifice in the article which is then heated to melt and remove the core; alternatively, the core may be eliminated through an orifice, as vapour by natural vaporization or subsequent to pyrogenation or chemical attack. The article formed may subsequently be impregnated.
