595,855. Explosives. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. May 22, 1945, No. 12777. Convention date, May 20, 1944. [Class 9 (ii)] A propellent powder comprises lamellar fragments or flakes of nitrated regenerated - cellulose sheet, said fragments having a diameter not exceeding 0.021 inch. The flowing property of the fragments, preferably of size between 0.009 and 0.021 inch, may be improved by adding thereto a small proportion of a waterinsoluble metal salt of a higher aliphatic acid, e.g. calcium stearate, which is preferably added to the nitrated and dried product with or without the addition of graphite. The sizing of the flakes may be accomplished either before or after nitration by comminuting and sieving in the wet or dry state. The comminuted and nitrated flakes may be mixed with nitroglycerin to form a double-base propellent powder or with surface deterrents such as dinitrotoluene or centralite and thereafter glazed with the water insoluble metal soap. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the treatment of flakes having (a) a diameter greater than 0.021 inch ; (b) an average cross-sectional dimension not greater than 0.021 inch ; and (c) a thickness between 0.0005 and 0.01 inch. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
