Abstract
776,539. Explosives. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Oct. 18, 1948 [Jan. 30, 1946], No. 3069/46. Class 9 (2). A crystalline explosive substance (e.g. cyclonite, pentaerythritol tetranitrate, tetryl), which cannot safely be melted, is rendered thermoplastic or pourable by mixing a wax-like substance with it and rolling the mixture. In a jacket-heated vessel, cyclonite is added to 40-60 times its weight of water and 10 per cent. of its weight of beeswax and heated to 80‹ to 90‹C. After stirring, most of the water is filtered off and the wax-coated granular product is passed through a differential rolling mill having five pairs of knurled bronze rolls. The water is then removed by stirring in a heated vessel. In a second example, wet cyclonite and 12 per cent. paraffin wax plus lecithin are mixed and rolled to produce a composition pourable at 70‹C. In a further example, beeswax dissolved in carbon tetrachloride is added to ten times its weight of cyclonite and the mixture transferred in batches to the rotating pan of an end-runner mill, having a scythe-like doctor.
