Abstract
An explosive composition contains, by weight, at least 25% of nitrate, from 5-20% of water, and up to 17% of a sensitizing agent consisting of nitroglycol or a mixture of nitroglycol and nitroglycerine. Ammonium, sodium, potassium, or calcium nitrate, or a mixture of two or more of these, may be used as the nitrate component. Wheat flour, starch, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, or guar gum may be added as a gelling agent for the aqueous portion of the mixture, and nitrocellulose as a gelling agent for the non-aqueous portion. Other optional ingredients are wood meal and kieselguhr; when wheat flour is included, dinitrotoluene or mononitrotoluene may be present to prevent rancidity. Part of the sensitizing agent may be replaced by mono-, di- or tri-nitrotoluene, RDX, tetryl, or PETN. The explosives may be made suitable for blasting by including a booster.
