Abstract
578,372. Explosives. THOMSON, T., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 19, 1942, No. 11669. [Class 9 (ii)] A flashless propellent ordnance powder producing only a faint smoke by day, comprises nitrocellulose, a liquid nitric ester, a moderant and a potassium salt of non-hygroscopic and non-corrosive properties, the proportions of the ingredients being such that the calorific value of the powder lies between 730 and 830 calories per gram, and the proportion of potassium salt being approximately equivalent to between 0.4 and 1.4 per cent metallic potassium based on the weight of the dry powder. The liquid nitric ester may be glycerine. The potassium salt may be the nitrate or sulphate. The moderant may have the property of gelatinizing the nitrocellulose, e.g. it may be an organic ester (dibutyl phthalate), ether, urethane, substituted urea or anilide, or it may not have this property, e.g. it may be mineral jelly. When the moderant has the said property, mixing may be carried out in water without using a solvent for the nitrocellulose. Also may be added a stabilizer, e.g. diphenylamine, and an aromatic nitro-compound to improve gelatinization of the nitrocellulose.
