Abstract

882,812. Railway vehicle transitional couplings and draw gear. HILGER, O., BUSCH, W., and FREIDRICHS, H., [trading as BERGISCHE STAHL-INDUSTRIE REMSCHEID]. Jan. 29, 1960 [Jan. 31, 1959], No. 3259/60. Class 103(5). A railway vehicle automatic coupler carried by a bell cranked and forked lever 13 pivoted at 12 to the coupler head and at 14 to a draw hook 15, may be lowered to disclose the hook by operating one of two hand levers 33 on either side of the vehicle, the lever 13 being connected by an intermediate cranked and forked lever 16 pivoted to toggle levers 28 which are extended to form the hand levers. The side plates 18 from which the guides 19 extend are pivoted to the pin 14, and the two forks of the lever 16 are connected rearwardly by a pin 25 sliding within the slots 20 and mounting at its middle a vertical pin 26 on which the toggle levers 28 are pivoted. The guides 19 support transversely extending slotted members 21 which guide pins 29 extending vertically from the levers 28, and the pins 29 are connected top and bottom by tension springs 30. When the coupler is connected to a mating coupler and is given a buffing load the coupler will assume the dotted position shown in Fig. 1, the lever 16 and the pins 25, 26 being forced rearwardly against the action of the toggle springs 30. As soon as the buffing force ceases to act the springs 30 draw the pins 29 towards one another and move the pin 26 outwardly thus causing the lever 13 to swing upwardly about the pin 14 and raise the coupler head. To lower the automatic coupler to an out of use position, one of the handles 33 must be pulled outwardly to cause the pins 25, 26 to move towards the vehicle headstock and the levers 28 to pass over centre until the pin 25 abuts the ends of the slots 20, Fig. 3. Height adjustment of the coupler head is made by turning the screws 23 to pivot the side plates 18. The inside surface of the lever 13 is convexly curved at the pin 14 in order that the lever with the coupler head may be turned in the horizontal plane.
