Abstract

288,391. Mackinnon, F. A., and Hampson, J. Jan. 25, 1927. Couplings, automatic, and automatic convertible to non-automatic. -An automatic coupler comprises a coupler head 10, a hook 41 and link 20 pivotally mounted in the head and means for raising the link and hook simultaneously. The hook and link are mounted on a pin 13, Fig. 4, in the coupler head and are each provided with extensions 44, 46 respectively adapted to be moved simultaneously by a head 50 formed on a. link 49 forming part of a toggle link 49, 48 operated by a transverse shaft 31. The coupler head may form a buffer having a rounded buffer face 12 and a bottom web 38 forming a guide for the opposing link. Each link is provided with a projection 24 by means of which an opposing link is raised clear of its corresponding hook during the coupling movement. The upper edge of the guide 38 on the buffer head forms a ledge by means of which a hook on a screwed link connection can be secured for non-automatic coupling purposes and a recess 47 is formed in the guide for the reception of the point of the hook. In a modification, Fig. 1, a projection 25 is formed on each arm of the link and a horizontal pin 26 secured to the hook 14 is connected by chains 28 to an arm 30 on a transverse shaft 31 so that in raising the hook the pin 26 contacts with the projections 25 on the link and raises the link also. A linkguide 16 is pivoted to the pin 13 and is provided with stops 18 which contact in the normal coupling position with stops 17 on the coupler head 10. This link-guide has an inclined surface 15 for guiding the opposing link in coupling and is provided with a boss 33 to support a screwed coupling rod 35 used for non-automatic coupling purposes.
