This invention relates to car couplers of the standard automatic type and has special reference to the means for transmitting a rotating motion to the rotary deviceforraising the lock and throwing the knuckle to its open position.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient uncoupling mechanism 7 which may be readily installed, and adapted to work with the present uncoupling arrangement now employed on Pullman cars that are equipped with the standard D coupler, and
to so construct the mechanism that it shall be also adaptable to all types of cars where the rotary method of operation of the coupler is used, and especially on cars used in passenger service where the coupler is required to be operated from'both sides of car.
A further object is to so construct the mechanism that it will readily adapt itself to the forward and back movements of the coupler in pulling and buliing, and to provide special means for the wide lateral move- A ment that is required for couplers in passenger service.

The coupler head 1 is the usual standard head carrying a knuckle 2 and containing a lock 3 for securing the knuckle in closed position.

Thelever 14 is provided with an elongated eye15 at its rear end which encircles the pin 13 between the walls of the bracket .12. By making the eye 15 elongated free movement of the lever 14 will be permitted when the coupler 1 is angledto its maximum position at either side of thecarrier 11, the lever '14 being free to actuate the lock 3 when the coupler 1 isangled to either side. l
The lever 14 is provided at its front end with a clevis 16 intowhieh is hinged the connectingv link 10, said link being free to rotate about a'pin 17 of the clevis. The upper end of connecting link 10 is rotatably mountedin the eye 9 of the rotor arm'8 and is retained in this position by means of an upturned portion 10 of link.
The construction of the rotor operating mechanism is such that the lever arm 8 is located to one side of the center line of cow '85 pler head 1. The lever 14 is in line with center of shank to provide more direct action on the rotor lever arm 8 and the relation of these two elements causes an offset to be made in. the connecting-link 10 as shown at '9 10*. This would have a tendency to cause the lever 14 to shift to one. side or the other when acted upon by an operating bail 18 7 through the medium of which motion is'imparted to the lock lifting mechanism; To '95 overcome the condition above mentioned, the forward portion of lever 14 is formed to provide a guide and support bar 19 on its underside, running parallel to'the top member and spaced the proper distance to admit .the operbail 18 may be supportedby links 20 depending from the carrier iron 11 and it may be providedwith crank arms 21 with which actuating rods 22 cooperate, the latter being suitably mounted and intended to extend to the sides of the car where they may be conveniently manipulated withoutrequiring the operator to enter between the cars.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. The combination with a coupler head, a lock within the head, a rotor provided with a lever arm mounted on the underside of the head, said rotor being pivoted rearwardly of said lock, and connected with the lock to release the same for uncoupling, of a lever mounted below and rearwardly of the rotor, a link between said lever and the lever arm on the rotor, means for swinging the lever upwardly, said lever having an elongated eye fulcrumed so that it may rock laterally on its fulcrum and provided with a slot for engaging the last mentioned means- 2. Thecombination with a coupler head, a lock therein, and a" rotor mounted on the underside of the head and connected with the lock, of a lever having an elongated eye loosely fulcrumed below and at the rear of the rotor whereby it may rock laterally on its fulcrum 7 an intermediate lever connected at one end to an arm on the shaft at a point forwardly of said shaft and having a sliding engagement with said member, the said mechanism being disposed with reference to a car end sill so as to avoid interference with train service lines.

lock therein, and a rotor mounted below the a head, said rotor being pivoted rearwardly of said lock, connections between said rotor and said lock, and an arm on said rotor, a lever, a connection between said lever and said arm on the rotor, and operating means for said lever and acting downwardly to retain the lock in locked position.
4. The combination witha coupler head, a lock therein, and a rotor mounted on the underside of the head and connected with the lock, of a lever arm on the rotor, a lever, a link connecting said lever with the lever arm of the rotor, an operating member, said lever having a guide banand support for said operating member, and the operatingmember constituting weight means for holding the lock in locked position while train is in motion.
