Abstract

874,876. Surgical syringes. ESCHMANN, M. March 1, 1960 [July 29, 1959], No. 7293/60. Class 81 (2). The plunger rod of a syringe is fitted with a valve device which restricts the escape of air as the plunger is retracted, so as to prevent the rapid retraction of the plunger, which might break the end cap of the syringe. The valve member 5 consists of a resilient sleeve having a radial flange 5a, which is received in recess 2b in the end cap 2. The upper face of this recess is planar so that the flange seats against it when the plunger rod 3 is drawn backwards and air can only escape from the enclosed space slowly. The lower face 2d of the recess is non-planar so that air can pass freely when the plunger is pressed downwards and its movement is unrestricted. The extension 5b of the valve member beyond the lower face of the end cap additionally serves as a resilient buffer against which the piston abuts when fully retracted.
