Abstract

1353218 Hypodermic syringes M WOELM 28 Oct 1971 [29 Oct 1970 22 April 1971] 50046/71 Heading A5R A hypodermic syringe comprises a piston rod 24, a spring 44, an operating lever 60, a slide 40 having a frusto-conical bore 48 and slidable on the piston rod, and a clutch in the form of balls 52 which, when the lever 60 is operated to aspirate body fluid (Fig. 6), become wedged in the bore 48 of the slide 40 due to the action of resilient elements 56 to lock the slide and the rod 24 together. When the operating lever 60 is released the spring 44 urges the slide 40 downwardly (as viewed) and the clutch is disengaged by the balls coming to rest against an annular shoulder 58 (Fig. 5) so that the piston rod can be operated independently of the lever 60. The lever 60 may extend on both sides of the piston rod and engage a fixed abutment on the other side of the housing 38 from the gripping end of the lever. Instead of the resilient elements 56, a further compression spring may be provided., A housing (8) may accommodate a disposable ampoule, or a refillable cylinder may alternatively be provided (Figs. I and 2, not shown).
