769,745. Hypodermic injection appliances. SCHERER CORPORATION, R. P. April 21, 1955 [July 12, 1954], No. 11525/55. Class 81(2) The force applied to the plunger of a needleless hypodermic injector is increased during the first part of the stroke by a force-multiplying means between the driving means and the plunger and comprising a confined plastic plug. In the form described the 'driving mechanism comprises a disc-like head 66 which is urged downwards by springs 64 but which may be raised to the position shown by winding it up a central screw 62.' When the screw is released, by withdrawing a latch 83, a piston 67, carried by the screw, first strikes a rubber plug 55 and the pressure therein is exerted over a greater area 43, where it is in contact with a piston 42 connected to the plunger 40 which engages the ampule stopper 33. The rubber is deformed during this part of the stroke and ultimately the disc 66 engages a further member 50, whereupon the entire assembly continues to move as a unit under the direct, i.e.. reduced force from the springs 64.
