Abstract

991,894. Surgical injection appliances. R. P. SCHERER CORPORATION. Aug. 15, 1961 [Aug. 15, 1960], No. 29444/61. Heading A5R. A needleless hypodermic injector provides a two-stage injection, the first of which is at relatively high pressure and is achieved by a pre-loaded spring which, on release, drives the plunger forward in advance of the main propelling means. Medicament is received in a chamber 18 from a storage bottle 34 through an adjustable three-way valve 40. The plunger head 74 is attached, with slight lost movement Y, in the end of a plunger rod 72 which is connected to a piston 70 through a pre-compressed spring 78 and adjusting bolt 90. The piston is sealed by a looped diaphragm 69 and is arranged to be driven towards the left by compressed air received through a union 136, the air supply being automatically switched on when the valve 40 is turned 90 degrees clockwise from the position shown, to connect the medicament chamber 18 with the outlet nozzle 52. In use, the valve 40 is first set to the position shown, whereupon the air supply is cut off and a spring 94 returns the plunger assembly to the limit of its travel, at which point a latch 132 engages behind the cup-shaped spring housing 76 and is held by a trigger 126. Retraction of the plunger head 74 draws in medicament from the container 34 and when this operation is complete the valve 40 is rotated to its discharge position. As stated above, this automatically switches on the air supply which consequently advances the piston 70 through the distance X, so compressing the already stressed spring 78. The injection is made by using the trigger 126 to release the latch 132, whereupon, initially, the spring 78 drives the plunger rod 72 forward to strike the head 74 to give a first high pressure stage of medicament injection. Immediately thereafter the piston 70 is advanced steadily by the air pressure, driving the plunger head 74 to the limit of is travel, for the second stage of injection.
