Abstract

741,604. Hypodermic syringes. EVERETT & CO., Ltd., S. & R. J. Oct. 14, 1953 [Oct. 16, 1952; Nov. 5, 1952; April 14, 1953; May 12, 1953; June 22, 1953; July 8, 1953; July 17, 1953], Nos. 26017/52, 27877/52, 10213/53, 13272/53, 17262/53, 18974/53 and 19917/53. Class 81(2). Hypodermic injection apparatus comprises a holder for a medicament phial which consists of a tube of uniform bore provided with a front closure to be pierced by the rear end of a double-ended hypodermic needle and a rear closure adapted to act as a piston, the holder having a plunger for engaging the rear closure and a member in which is a needle-holding socket in the form of a recess having a flat front face in the rear surface of the member to accommodate a flat plate extending radially from the needle shaft and a bore extending forwards from the recess to accommodate a bush on the needle shaft, a slot being provided in the member extending from the bore to a free edge of the member to permit the needle shaft to be introduced sideways into the socket. The holder 1 is channel-shaped and closed at its front end by a transverse wall 2 having a central aperture in which a bushing 15 of the needle mount can be fitted and a radial slot 12 so that the needle can be introduced sideways. The needle mount is completed by a disc 16 which fits a recess in the rear face of the transverse wall 2. A phial, Fig. 3, comprising a glass tube 18, a front closure 19 and a rear closure 20 is held in the holder 1 by spring clips 29. The front closure 19 is of rubber and has an extension 25 projecting forwardly beyond the glass tube 18. A bore 26 in the front closure 19 is provided to accommodate the rear end 14 of the needle but is longer than the rear end 14 so that the closure 19 is not completely pierced by the needle until the front closure 19 is compressed. The rear closure 20 is of rubber and is constricted at its rear end in a sleeve 23 which projects rearwardly beyond the closure 20. The phial and the needle may be supplied as a unit and introduced into the holder 1 together. The holder 1 is provided with a plunger 7 having a transverse pin 9 which is introduced into the sleeve 23 of the rear closure 20, projections 22 within the sleeve 23 forming a bayonet connection so that the plunger may be used for withdrawing the rear closure 20. A sleeve 6, Fig. 5, is threaded in a bushing 5 in a rear tubular extension 3 of the holder 1. The sleeve 6 has a forwardly directed extension 27 which on screwing up the sleeve 6 bears against the glass tube 18 to push it forward thus compressing the front closure 19 so that the rear end 14 of the needle completely pierces the front closure 19. The phial may alternatively be moved forwardly by the plunger 7 so that the front closure 19 is compressed and completely pierced by the needle in which case on releasing the pressure the phial may be retracted by the elasticity of the front closure 19. In alternative constructions of phial (not shown) the rear closure may be provided with a rubber bavonet-like connection or a rubber screw thread. In the use of the latter, the plunger is provided with a complementary screw thread. In an alternative construction of holder (not shown) the disc of the needle mount is introduced sideways into a socket formed between a semicircular nut and the front face of the holder and is secured by turning the nut. According to the first Provisional Specification the holder may be in the form of a flat sheet of metal on which the phial is secured by spring clips and the needle mount is rectangular. According to the third Provisional Specification the rim of the face of the plunger has a series of axially projecting ratchet teeth which on rotation of the plunger may be caused to bite into the rear closure of the phial so that it can be withdrawn. According to the fifth Provisional Specification the rear end of the needle is closed but is provided with an aperture in the side which is sealed when covered by the bore in the front closure. The rear closure may be withdrawn by a cord or wire secured to it. The phial which may be used for filling syringes may be provided with a front closure fitted with a needle valve and a socket lined with rubber or plastic into which the nozzle of a syringe may be fitted. According to the sixth Provisional Specification the plunger is mounted eccentrically in the syringe and the head of the plunger is mounted eccentrically on the plunger so that in one position it will engage the rear closure and at an angle of 180 degrees to this position it will engage the body of the phial.
