Abstract
789,029. Hypodermic syringes. AKTIEBOLAGET ASTRA-APOTEKARNES KEMISKA FABRIKER. Sept. 5, 1955 [Oct. 27, 1954], No. 25475/55. Class 81 (2). A hypodermic syringe comprises a tubular body 1 having a wall partially closing its rear and a front wall 57 having a perforatable central portion, a holder 11, for a double-ended needle 14, slidably mounted within the body, an extensible spring 67 in the rear end of the body, a compressible ampoule 5 disposed between the spring 67 and the needle holder 11, means for locking the spring 67 in compressed position and means for releasing the locking means so that the needle 14 perforates the front wall of the body and the ampoule 5, and the ampoule 5 is compressed and its contents discharged through the needle 14. A spring-pressed plunger 19 is housed in the cylinder 1 which is formed in two parts 51, 52. The needle holder 11 has a recess 12 into which the ampoule 5 is pressed by the plunger 19 when it is to be pierced by the rear end of the needle 14. The forward end of the needle 14 rests in a sleeve 58 inside the front wall 57 of the cylinder 1. A rearwardly extending plunger stem 62 is held at the rear of the cylinder by inter-engaging lugs 68, 71 on a washer 65 and the stem 62 respectively, and by a pin 72 passing through the end of the plunger stem 19. On removing the pin 72 and disengaging the lugs 68, 71 by turning the washer 65, the plunger 19 is urged forwardly by the spring 67 so that the front wall 15 of the receptacle 5 and a part 59 of the front wall 57 of the cylinder 1 are punctured by the rear and front ends of the needle 14 respectively, and liquid is expelled as the ampoule 5 collapses. The rear end of the plunger stem 62 may be retained by radial metal tongues which engage a groove in the stem and which are carried by a sleeve on the cylinder 1. On telescoping the sleeve on the cylinder 1, the tongues are deflected to release the plunger. In another construction, Fig. 9, an ampoule 5 having side ribs 38 is flattened for the ejection of fluid as it passes into a longitudinal slot 44 in the plunger 19. All parts of the syringes except the needles are made of synthetic plastic material.
