Abstract
724,671. Hypodermic syringes. BISHOP & CO., PLATINUM WORKS, J. Feb. 4, 1953. [Feb. 7, 1953] No. 3159/53. Class 81 (2). A hypodermic syringe comprises. a rigid barrel 1 having an inturned flange 4 at one end, a flexible cylindrical plug 8 having an external coaxial groove which engages with the inturned flange 4 to secure it in the barrel 1, a needle assembly comprising a cannula and a hub 24 intermediate the ends thereof with a cylindrical portion 27 which is adapted to fit a bore in the plug 8 and is provided with spaced parallel ridges 28, 29 adapted to engage and deform the wall of the bore of the plug 8. A handle 7 having a bore is adapted to enclose the injection end 20 of the cannula and is received by a tapering portion 21 of the hub 24. A threaded bore 16 of the handle 7 is adapted to engage a threaded stud 6 on a piston 2 within the barrel 1. When.the syringe is not in use the handle 7 is used to cover the injection end 20 of the cannula and the cylindrical portion 27 of the hub 24 projects into the bore of the plug 8 to the extent of only one rib 28 so that the plug 8 is not perforated. In use, the threaded bore 16 of the handle 7 is screwed over the stud 6 of the piston 2 so that the handle 7 may be used as a piston rod and the hub 24 is pushed into the bore of the plug 8 as far as the second rib 29 so that the plug 8 is perforated. The piston 2 preferably has a rigid core integral with the stud 6 and is covered by a rubber sleeve provided with flexible ridges 5. Screw-threaded parts of the syringe are made of metal or synthetic resin and the barrel is made of glass.
