Abstract

735,538. Hypodermic syringes. TRANSUE, G. O. March 4, 1953, No. 6054/53. Class 81 (2). A hypodermic syringe injector apparatus comprises a syringe support which is slidably mounted in a casing structure comprising two telescopically connected tubular members and retaining means adapted to hold the support in a retracted position against the action of resilient means, the arrangement being that relative axial movement of the said tubular members is effective to disengage the retaining means so as to release the support for projection by the resilient means and consequently carry with it the hypodermic syringe and bring the needle to a projected position. The apparatus shown comprises a syringe 11 enclosed within a support sleeve 17 carried by a casing structure formed by telescopically connected sleeves 18 and 19. The syringe is provided with a flange 15 such that it also moves when the sleeve 17 is retracted relatively to the casing structure. The sleeve 19 is provided with radially offset grooves 35, 37, and the sleeve 17 with a groove 36 whilst the sleeve 18 is provided with ballcariying apertures 34. A spring 24 is provided between the sleeves 17 and 18. In use, when it is desired to " cock " the apparatus, the cylinder 19 is held whilst the head 30 is pulled in the direction of the arrow A (Fig. 2). This pull effects compression of the spring 24 and the movement of sleeve 17 from the position shown in Fig. 1 to its position of Fig. 2. At this point one or more of the balls 33 carried in the apertures 34 will drop into the groove 36 thereby preventing further movement of the sleeve 17 in the direction A relatively to the sleeve 18. On exerting a further pull sleeves 17 and 18 will move together in direction A the balls 33 all being forced into the groove 37 where they will be frictionally retained, this retention effecting the "cooking " of the various moving members of the apparatus in the positions shown in Fig. 3. For operational purposes the sleeve 18 is grasped and the face 42 of the adjustable sleeve 40 placed against the patient's skin with sufficient pressure to cause the sleeve 19 to shift relatively to the sleeve 18 to the position of Fig. 2. The spring 24 then effects injection of the needle 13 prior to the manual injection of medicament by projecting the syringe plunger 12.
