Abstract
671,741. Hypodermic syringes. ABBOTT LABORATORIES. March 16, 1950 [March 19, 1949], No. 6662/50. Class 81 (ii). A hypodermic syringe comprises a barrel 1, open at its upper end, with a detachable cannula 2 and having a slidable plunger rod 5, of a diameter capable of passing within an ampoule and carrying a resilient pistonlike gasket 11, closely fitting the bore of the barrel. To use the syringe for aspirating, the gasket 11 is engaged in a groove 20 in the plunger 5 and is held by its enlarged end. The plunger is then pressed fully inwards, carrying the gasket with it and, after the needle has been inserted in the patient, the plunger is withdrawn so that the gasket 11 acts as a piston. For injection purposes the plunger is completely withdrawn, a filled ampoule is placed in the barrel and the plunger is reinserted. Under these conditions the gasket 11 is arrested by the upper end of the ampoule and, on the continued application of pressure, the plunger travels inward, pushing the ampoule plug 15 before it and ejecting the contents. For the sake of convenience, in the arrangement shown the plunger rod passes through a hinged cover plate 10 so as to pivot, in its fully withdrawn position, about the upper edge of the barrel.
