Abstract

1357825 Hypodermic syringes AMPOULES INC 10 Jan 1972 [11 Feb 1971] 1081/72 Heading A5R A hypodermic ampoule syringe comprises a first chamber containing a powder-medicament 123, Figure 2, and defined by a cylinder 111 closed at one end by a slidable plunger 116 carrying a needle 118 and at the other end by a diaphragm, and a second chamber containing a liquid medicament or vehicle 132 and defined by a cylinder 112 closed at one end by diaphragm 115 and at the other end by diaphragm 127, whereby in use, liquid 132 and powder 123 are mixed prior to making a subcutaneous or an intramuscular injection by moving plunger 116 and needle 118 to project needle 118 through diaphragm 115 and then moving cylinder 111, diaphragm 115, plunger 116 and needle 118, as a unit, towards the diaphragm 127 to expel the liquid 132 through needle 118 into the first chamber, diaphragms 115, 127 being brought substantially into engagement during this operation with the pointed end of the needle in position to project through diaphragm 127 on further movement of plunger 116 towards diaphragms 115, 127. The second chamber may be divided into a plurality of compartments containing different liquid medicaments or vehicles by slidable, pierceable diaphragms 167, 168, Figure 6, the liquids being successively conveyed into the first chamber by an operation similar to that above. The diaphragm 127 is retained by means of a skinengaging clip 125 held by a bead on cylinder 112. When the liquid and powder have been mixed in an intramuscular syringe, Figures 7, 8 (not shown), having a longer needle the plunger is still above the level of the mixture in the first chamber. Prior to application against the skin, the needle is forced through the bottom diaphragm, 127 or (186), until the plunger contacts the mixture and the needle projects for a length sufficient to enter the muscle layers before further plunger movement to inject the mixture. A needle-guard (188) snapfitting on clip 125 may be used to shield the projecting needle 118 prior to injection. Specification 1011301 is referred to.
