Abstract
1,089,608. Medicament containers. UPJOHN CO. Aug. 8, 1966 [Aug. 9, 1965], No. 35427/ 66. Heading A5R. Apparatus for containing separately two sterile ingredients so that they may be subsequently mixed together in the apparatus and then injected into a patient comprises a first ingredient chamber 11 and a second ingredient chamber 13 joined together by a telescopic coupling 39, 56 which includes a cannula 53 and a sealing member 46 separating the two ingredients, the arrangement being such that by moving the two chambers together the cannula 53 pierces the sealing member 46 to open the passageway between the two ingredients, an actuator being provided in the chamber 13 for forcing the second ingredient to flow into the chamber 11 to mix with the first ingredient. As particularly described, the chamber 13 and actuator comprise the barrel and plunger of an hypodermic syringe and, after mixing the second liquid ingredient with the first powdered ingredient, the apparatus can be inverted and the mixture withdrawn into the syringe and the syringe with the member 56 and cannuta 53 attached can be separated and used for an injection. The apparatus may include a butyl rubber stopper 12 covered with a metallic seal 40 and the sealing member 46 has concave side walls and is initially slightly compressed. The piston of the syringe plunger may be of butyl rubber and the syringe barrel is of glass or plastics. The two tubular parts 39, 56 of the telescopic coupling may be yieldably held together by interfitting ridges 62, 63 and the apparatus may be provided in a plastics and cardboard package. In an alternative embodiment (Figure 6, not shown), barbs (77) on the part 39 replace the ridges 62 and the sealing member 46 (46A) is of modified shape.
