Abstract

777,302. Hypodermic infection devices. SCHERER CORPORATION. R. P. Julv 18, 1955 [Sept. 7, 1954], No. 20760/55. Class 81(2) The power means for operating a needleless hypodermic injector comprises a number of pairs of diametrically placed springs. The appliance described has a primary plunger 50 and a secondary plunger 60, so actuated by spring means bearing on a disc 70 that the plunger 50 strikes the ampoule piston 46, over a small area, thereby giving an initial high pressure injection, and thereafter the disc 70 engages the head 64 of the secondary plunger 60 so that both plungers more downward together, bearing on the whole area of the piston 46. This arrangement is similar to that described in Specification 705,515. However, in the present apparatus the power springs are arranged in diametrical pairs around the central axis, each pair consisting of two concentric, oppositely wound springs 80, 81, and having a guide rod 71a at their centre. The winding stem 74 has a double thread and is rotated, to compress the power springs, by the winding head 14, and is latched, prior to winding, by wedge latches 82 engaging under a pin 76. These wedges are withdrawn by pressure on a knob 90 to allow their outer ends to' pass into recesses 92. The primary plunger 50 engages the sleeve 72 with a single thread only so that fine adjustment of its position in relation to the ampoule piston 46 can be obtained. If the diametrically opposite springs are of different periodicity the tendency to eject the medicament with a high frequency surge is minimized. A dosage sleeve 12 is threaded on to the body 10 so that any predetermined quantity of medicament can be expelled prior to the injection. It is retained in various set positions by a spring arm 15 engaging in locating notches.
