Abstract
785,583. Hypodermic syringes. AMERICAN HOME PRODUCTS CORPORATION. April 9, 1956 [April 19, 1955], No. 10698/56. Class 81 (2). An adjustable injection syringe adapted for use with ampoules of different lengths but of the same diameter comprises a barrel 1, Figs. 1, 2, a unit formed of an ampoule 3 and a cartridge needle 4, and a plunger rod 18 of varying diameter engaging the ampoule 3. The head 9 of the barrel is hinged on pivots 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, and slots 17, 171 receive an adjustable locking slide 26, Fig. 3, having an aperture 27 through which the rod 18 passes. One portion of the aperture 27 is large enough to permit the large portion 23 of the rod to pass, the other portion 28 only allows the smaller part 24 of the rod to pass through. The needle is formed with a threaded hub 38 engaging a threaded opening 39 in the barrel and with an extension which penetrates the hub 38, which acts as a stopper in the end of the ampoule. For use with 1 c.c. ampoules, the slide 26 is adjusted so that the 2 c.c. indicium 31 is exposed, the rod 18 is then drawn through the aperture 27 until a flange 19 acts on a flange 13 and compresses the spring 29, so that the sleeve 12 is drawn free of the barrel and the head 9 swung aside and the syringe loaded. After engaging the threaded bore 20 of the rod 18 with the ampoule plunger, the slide 26 is moved to expose the 1 c.c. indicium 32, so that the smaller portion of the rod may pass through the aperture and the syringe is ready for use. For use with 2 c.c. ampoules the procedure is as above except that the 2 c.c. indicium is left exposed. In a modification, the adjustment for the different ampoules is made by means of a leaf-spring 126, Fig. 5, attached to the barrel and a slide 34 which depresses the spring into the barrel bore when moved to the right.
