874,327. Artificial limbs. BLATCHFORD & SONS Ltd., C. A. May 27, 1959 [May 27, 1958], No. 16814/58. Class 81 (2). A locking-device for an artificial knee joint, which is a simplified form of that described in Specification 779,087, comprises a brake band, connected to the thigh, passing around a drum rotatable with the shin, provision for relative movement between the thigh and shin, so as to lock the knee when the leg is bearing weight, and the parts being so positioned relative to each other that the lock is released or prepared for release shortly before the leg is lifted from the ground to make a forward swing in walking. The spindle 5A, which is rigidly connected to the shin portion 2, is mounted for rotation in bearing bushes carried in a pair of radius arms 8, pivoted at 10 to a frame 4 secured to the thigh portion 1. A brake band 11B passes round a drum 6, on the spindle 5A, and around an adjustable block 11C and the pivot 10, to a tensioning adjustment 13C. When weight is put on the leg, the abutment 11C and pivot 10 are lowered, relative to the drum 6, so that the band is tightened and the brake is applied. The angle between the arms 8 and the vertical is between 10 and 45 degrees, so that, towards the end of a stride, when the leg is at the rearmost point of its movement, the arms are nearly vertical and the downward thrust of the wearer's weight has relatively little effect for braking. The brake consequently tends to be released and this is assisted by springs 16 which urge the arms 8 in a counter-clockwise direction.
