Abstract
712,942. Artificial legs. BLATCHFORD, W. A. D. April 14, 1953 [May 28, 1952], No. 13533/52. Class 81(2) An artifical leg having a pivotal knee joint which may be locked when the leg is upright, comprises a locking member to be retracted into the thigh or projected from the thigh for engaging a cooperating locking member on the shin so that the shin may be locked in any one of two or more depressions relative to the thigh. The shin member 11 is pivoted relative to the thigh member 4 on a bolt 5. A locking catch 1 is mounted on a pivot 2 on the thigh member 4. The shin member 11 carries a member 12 having depressions 13, 14 which the locking catch 1 engages to lock the limb in a straight or partially bent position. More than two depression may be provided. The catch 1 is normally held projecting from the thigh member 4 by a tension spring 6. Retraction of the catch 1 is effected by a pull on the wearer's control cord 8a and, when the knee is fully bent, by a chain 9 to prevent the catch 1 from damaging clothing &c. The leg is locked in a straight position when the catch 1 engages' one depression 13 in the member 12. The leg may then be bent when the catch 1 is retracted by the control cord 8a. As the leg is straightened from a fully bent position, the catch 1 may either be held by the control cord 8a in a retracted position until the leg is fully straightened or be 'released to engage with the depression 14 and 'lock the leg in a partially bent position, further straightening of the leg causing the catch 1 to ride over a cam surface 15a joining the two depressions 13, 14 until it engages with the depression 13 in straight position. A check cord 15 connecting the thigh and shin members 4, 11 at the rear prevents hyperextension of the leg.
