669,354. Artificial legs. HANGER & CO., Ltd., J. E., and BROWN, P. Feb. 16, 1950 [May 2, 1949], No. 11703/49. Class 81 (ii). An artificial knee joint has locking means for retaining it in the straight position, the lock being manually releasable to allow the knee to bend when required, but locking automatically when it is straightened. The calf portion of the leg b is mounted on a spindle x to pivot in bearings carried by the thigh portion a and has a member k having a slot in which a spring-loaded catch g engages when the knee is in the straight position. A horizontal rod c extends across a cam f mounted on the spindle x to an external knob d. The catch is released by depressing the knob d so that the rod c turns clockwise about the cam / and, after the knee is bent, the cam holds the catch raised until the leg has nearly returned to the straight position. The knob d may be connected for operation from a remote point.
