Abstract

589,174. Beam compasses. BURKINSHAW; W. A., and WALKER, W. S. March 29, 1945, No. 7965. [Class 97 (iii)] A beam compass comprises a needle-carrying leg 5 containing a sleeve 7 in which is slidably, fitted a beam 1 carrying a marking leg 2. A rotatable setting member 9 bearing a spiral groove 12 co-operates with a projection on the sleeve to give fine adjustment. The leg 5 includes a handle 3 through which a spring- loaded rod 16 passes carrying a locking wedge 19 at its bottom end and an operating knob 20 at the top. A box 4 is formed on this leg made in two pieces and upporting the rotatable setting member 9 and the sleeve 7. The beam 1 is bifurcated and the wedge normally presses between the two limbs 13 to form a locking device which may be released by the knob 20.
