Abstract

757,796. Beam compasses. WEST, H. S. April 14, 1954 [April 15, 1953], No. 10364/53. Class 97 (3). In a compass comprising a beam and two legs slidable and clampable thereon, one of the legs proper is pivoted on a body slidably mounted on the beam and has an arm extending beside the body with its free end adjustable towards and away from the body to effect fine adjustment of the compass radius setting. As shown, each of the legs 11, 20 has a lock pad formed with pegs adapted to seat against the beam 10 which is of dumb-bell cross-section, and while the leg proper 13 is integrally formed with the mounting body 12, the adjustable leg is pivoted on the body 21 at 23 and has an arm 25 forked at 25a extending roughly parallel to the-beam towards which it is urged by a spring 7 and from which it is moved by an adjusting screw 33 engaging in a threaded block (not shown) on a pivot pin 34. The adjustable leg is also adapted to carry different lower leg portions 26 for pencil, ink, or divider work. The beam may be in two parts joined by a separate sleeve having a lock pad of the same kind as the compass legs or one beam length may have a joining sleeve integral with it. All the parts may be of die-cast aluminium.
