Abstract

555,278. Ellipsographs. SPALDING, C. Feb. 18, 1942, No. 2200. [Class 97 (iii)] An ellipsograph comprises an adjustable structure constituted by a rigid support post 6 pivoted directly to a rigid stylus mounting leg 7, a stylus 13, rotatable and slidable on the leg, and adjustment means to vary the spread of the stylus relative to the leg. The minor axis of the ellipse described by the instrument is defined by the spread of the stylus, and the difference between the minor and major axes is determined by the inclination of the leg with respect to the drawing surface, this difference being accommodated by the axial movement of the stylus along the leg whilst maintaining contact with the drawing surface. The foot of the post 6 is pivoted to a finger plate 9 marked with a central datum line for registery with an extension of the major axis of the ellipse. An index scale 15 may be provided.
