ARTIFICIAL KNEE-JOINT,
Application filed his 13, 1913, Serial No. 767,718. Renewed october 12, 191
To all w]: 0722 it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLYDE A. Auuoini,
-- e citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San. Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful improvement in Artificial Knee- Joints, of which the following is u specification. i
My invention relates to knee bolts and back checks for artificial limbs, wherein the knee bolt is pivotally mounted Within the stump portion and is rigidly secured to the leg portion and is provided with s leterel member adapted to engage an adjustable stop for the purpose of limiting the for- Word movement of the said leg portion, and its objects are, first, to provide back check secured to the leg portiouund adept-ed to engage 2%, stop Within. the stump portion Without having a slot in the said stump portion, second, to provide means which may be secured to the back check for the purpose of operating the leg portion, third, to provide a device of the character described which shell be simple in construction, have few parts and one Whici may be adjusted Without removing; the artificial limb.
I accomplish these several features by means of the device illustrated in the drawings forming a port of the present specification, wherein like numerals of reference designs to similar parts throughout the said drawings and specification and in which:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an artificial limb showing the shoulder straps and the check strep, the lower portion. of the leg being broken away. Fig; 2 is on enlarged vertical section showing the knee bolt, the back check secured thereto, the adjustable stop and the manner in which the lower end of the shoulder straps are secured to the back check.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 is used to designate a leg portion having rigid side bar 2 secured at each side of the upper end thereof. A knee bolt 3 is rigidly secured between the upper ends of the rigid side bar 2 and is provided with an arm 4: to which it roller 5 is secured. A stump portion 6 is rotutnbly mounted upon the bolt 3 and is provided with a lug 7 having a nut 8 secured to the lower end thereof. Within the lug, 7 is a screw 9 which enge es the not ,8 on the lower end of the'lug An opening 10 is provided in the front portion of the stump 6 for the adjustment of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Kiley iii, Serial No, Bdzl illd.
screw 9. A strap 12 passes over roller is; and through a slot 15 inthe front portion of the stump 6, said strep slso engaging the roller 5 on the arm l and from thence passing through it slot 15 and over 2. roller 1'? in the buck portion of the stump. The upper ends of the strap 12 are secured t the lower ends of the two shoulder straps 18. A strap check encircles the upper portion of the stump 6 for the purposeof retaining the upper ends of the strap adjacent to the stump 6.
We will assume for the purpose of illustration, that the artificial limb shown here in is attached to the stump of the right leg While the body is being supported by th l i leg in taking a step forward with the right leg; right knee will first be brought forword which causes the leg portion 1 to move slightly backward, when the arm 4: moving with the knee bolt 3 of the leg 1 will swing away from the screw 9 until. the leg portion 1 is clear of the ground. In step-pins formi-c1 with the right leg a slight hitbh of either shoulder will be communicated means of the shoulder straps l3, strap 12 and pulley to the arm l which to the knee bolt 3, and cause the leg 1 to be brought forward until the the arm l engages the lower end of screw 9, when the foot of the leg portion 1 is in a position to support the Weight of the wearer and may be placed up n the ground.
When standing, the Weight of the body being naturally slightly in. iidvance of the. knee bolt 3, the stump portion 6 will tend to rotate on the knee bolt 3 rigidly secured to the rigid side bar 2 of the leg portion 1, until thelorver end of the sorewl) within the stump {iortionb engages the outer end of the arm l. 1 r
The forward movement of the leg portion 1 may be adjusted by turning the scl'eur 9, thereby causing the said screw 3 to be extended beyond or receded Within the supporting nut 8 secured to the lug 7 of the stump portion 6.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided a simple and eiiective buck check which may be adjusted \rithout rcmo ing the artificial lim Having'thus described by invention whet I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:- v
An artificial {R1166 joint comprising s leg portion having e lmee bolt rigidly ee'
