Abstract
871,852. Tufting machines. COBBLE BROS. MACHINERY CO. Ltd. June 2, 1959 [June 23, 1958], No. 18791/59. Class 112 In a tufting machine comprising a reciprocable needle 11 and a looptaking hook 18, the needle descends through a channel which extends to a point adjacent the hook, the channel being sufficiently narrow to prevent re-entry therein of a previously formed and spread loop, whereby the latter is held away from the path of the needle. As shown, the cloth plate 13 is provided with cloth-supporting fingers 14 which extend between the needles, the cloth plate being raised from the bed plate (not shown) by shims 16. A guard member 21, secured to plate 13 by screws which pass through the shims 16, is formed on its rear face 23 with vertical channels 24 each of which is aligned with a needle 11, and which is just wide enough to permit face passage of a needle and the yarn 19 carried thereby. The wall 23 is spaced less than a stitch length from the plane of the needle axes. The inner wall 26 of each channel is so positioned that, when the hook 18 moves anti-clockwise at the end of a loop-taking cycle, the corresponding movement thereby imparted to the entrained loop is arrested by wall 26, whereby the loop is first stretched and is then positively stripped from the hook. The released loop springs out of the channel and spreads out. It is thus unable to re-enter the channel into the path of the needle. It is stated that the arrangement is most suitable for loop lengths ranging from <SP>1</SP>/ 2 to <SP>7</SP>/ 8 inch.
