Abstract
871,064. Valves. VON PLATEN, B.C. Sept. 9, 1957 [Aug. 26, 1957], No. 28330/57. Class 135. A closure member for a valve comprises a cylinder 8, Fig. 1, a piston 9 movable in the cylinder and connected to the end of the valve spindle 4, in such a way as to accommodate misalignment therebetween, an elastic packing piece 11 and a core 10 held by the packing piece 11 such that when the valve is closed the core covers the orifice in the valve seat 14. The lower walls of the cylinder 8 are tapered inwardly, so that when the closure member has seated further movement of the spindle 4 compresses the elastic packing 11 which forces both the ends 21 of the cylinder and the annular ridge 20 of the core hard against the seating 14, thereby preventing the packing piece 11 from spreading along the surface of the seating 14. Instead of the walls of the cylinder being inwardly tapered they may be inwardly stepped. In another embodiment the core 10 may be provided with a stem which extends through clearance holes in the elastic packing 11 and the piston 9 into a mating hole in the spindle 4, the piston in this embodiment not being attached to the spindle but abutting the end of the spindle instead. In a further embodimentthe core may be found integral with the piston via a neck that yields driving operation. Alternatively it may be integrally connected to the cylinder by spokes passing through the elastic packing. In another form the cylinder 8b, Fig. 5, is of inverted cup form having a flexible flange 9b which replaces the piston 9, Fig. 1; a button on a pillar 32, Fig. 5, is secured to the flange 9b the pillar, being in an axial bore in the spindle 4 and engaging the lower end of the latter.
