Abstract

870,132. Drying sections of paper-making machines. SPOONER DRYER & ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Aug. 14, 1959 [Aug. 26, 1958; July 14, 1959], Nos. 27279/58 and 24114/59. Class 96. A web of paper 112 passes about a succession of dryer drums 114, 111 whereon it is subjected to jets of hot air, from hoods encompassing the drums, which may be directed e.g. as illustrated, to hold the paper against the drums and to aid in guiding it along its course e.g. after a break in the web. In passing from one drum to the next, the paper is encompassed by e.g. extensions 143, 147 of the hoods, doctor blades 141, 140 being fitted to ensure the web does not stick to the drums. Flexible connections 124 in the pipes supplying the hoods with hot air allow for movement of the hoods to facilitate servicing, during which the heater 121 may be by-passed at 130. Exhaust air may be withdrawn with a main hood 117, or the section may be totally enclosed, the exhaust air being largely re-circulated by a fan 120. Fresh air from an inlet 128 may be passed through a heat-exchanger (not shown). In modifications the hood extensions may have no nozzles; a felt band may aid in passing the paper from one drum to the next; or a.cylinder may press the paper on to the drum.
